Eating Disorders - What does that actually mean?

Obsessive eating habits are a problem for many people old and young these days. Adolescents and young adults in particular like to compare themselves with their peers, and it is not uncommon for them to hear negative comments about their body-shape and weight. This sometimes goes as far as bullying and often affects self-esteem. Insecurity in dealing with other people and the desire to be perfect aggrevate the problem. These factors contribute to all kinds of abnormal eating patterns.  

But when do we speak of an eating disorder? It is quite normal for us to concern ourselves with our own bodies, at least during puberty. Dealing with nutrition and diets are also commonplace at this day and age. If diets and checking yourself in the mirror, especially with regard to the body size and shape, become frequent and regular, one should take a closer look.  

Eating disorders can be characterized by constant worries about weight and appearance. Even if you keep thinking about food and all your attention is focused on the next meal it might be a sign of an eating disorder. Refusal to eat or uncontrolled binge eating, secret eating, constant fear that one might gain weight and being very critical of one's own body are indications. The good news is that eating disorders can be treated successfully with holistic counseling.

Treatment is important. Because 'untreated' eating disorders affect your life considerably, more than you might realize, and especially in the long run.
